Phosphatidylserine is a naturally occurring lipid that helps make up the cell membrane enwrapping every cell in the body. As part of the cell structure, phosphatidylserine is crucial to cellular functioning, especially in the brain.

1. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

A 2012 study published in European Psychiatry found evidence that in combination with omega-3 fatty acids, phosphatidylserine may aid in the treatment of ADHD in children. The study followed more than 200 children, each taking either the supplement or a placebo. Study results revealed that participants in the supplement (non-placebo) group showed significantly greater reductions in hyperactivity and improved impulse control and mood compared with the placebo group.

A 2010 study published in the Journal of Clinical Biochemistry and Nutrition revealed significant gains in memory function among its participants. 78 elderly patients with cognitive impairment were given phosphatidylserine and compared to a control (placebo) group. Participants with low memory scores at the beginning of the study were found to have significantly improved memory function after six months on phosphatidylserine.


3. Depression

A 2015 study published in the journal, Mental Illness, described the effects of phosphatidylserine on elderly patients with depression. Patients were given a supplement containing phosphatidylserine and the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA three times daily for twelve weeks. At the study’s conclusion, depression scores were much lower.


4. Stress

According to a report by Sports Medicine magazine, phosphatidylserine protects against the release of the stress hormone cortisol, which is common after overtraining.


5. Exercise Performance

According to a 2006 report, phosphatidylserine may improve athletic performance and exercise capacity. The report found that phosphatidylserine reduces muscle soreness and speeds recovery.


More scientific testing is needed to determine exactly how phosphatidylserine works but since 2003, even the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has agreed that “preliminary research suggests that consumption of phosphatidylserine may reduce the risk of dementia and cognitive disfunction in the elderly.”

A 2015 review of more than 100 studies concluded that humans can effectively absorb up to 800mg of phosphatidylserine per day. However, according to the Natural Medicine Comprehensive Database, a dosage of only about 300mg (taken throughout the day) is ideal for memory treatment.
